You want TOMATOES in THIS heat??

Whew! It's hot-hot-hot everywhere, particularly in The Woodlands, and your tomato plants think so too! They yearn for cooler nights -- below 70 degrees! -- in order to "set" and produce fruit. Alas, spring is well over by June here, and so are the cooler nights.

Turn the soil and fertilize (egg shells are good!) in November or December. Plant your tomatoes in mid-February (try a 9-foot x 9-foot raised bed), water them well, protect them with netting from the birds, and you will have your first tomatoes three months later in mid-May! (A little tip from a reader of the Houston Chronicle)
